Want to buy a house but credit cards in default?

I have a couple credit cards that I let go due to my financial status . I'm renting from a buddy but have to be out in about 6-8 months. I want to buy a house and will need a co signer. Can I still qualify with a co signer if my credit cards are still in default? If not what should I do
